Job Description

JOB TITLE:  Manager of Safety Training

REPORTS TO:  Director of Safety

OVERVIEW OF ROLE:  Manager of Safety Training oversees and manages the company's various safety training activities including ADTP, BDTP, MDQP and driver/dockworker training with a focus on developing new drivers, qualifying mechanics as CDL drivers, and improving the safety performance of existing drivers and dockworkers. 


  • Develop Ward's Advance Driver Training Program (ADTP), Basic Driver Training Program (BDTP), Skill Enhancement, and Mechanic Driver Qualification Program (MDQP) to meet company needs and requirements.
  • Oversee all training and administration of ADTP, BTDP, and MDQP including the completion of all required training documentation and cross training senior trainers on all aspects of each program.
  • Assists RSCMs, Corporate Recruiters, and HR personnel with the selection and vetting of potential ADTP, BDTP and maintenance candidates.
  • Communicate with candidates for all of the above training programs to ensure they have met all program requirements prior to the scheduled start date.
  • Manage expenses, company car use, and duties of driver trainers that are assisting with above programs.
  • Communicate with appropriate personnel in Operations, HR, and Maintenance as needed to secure equipment for the training programs, update on program results, as well as discuss and resolve any issues that may develop, including any that involve individual driver trainees.
  • Assist with the development of Ward-specific coaching and training programs for the prevention of accidents, injuries, and CSA/OSHA violations.
  • Work with Director of Safety to prioritize the work completed by senior trainers to maintain a focus on crash and injury prevention, as well as regulatory compliance.
  • Coach and mentor the senior trainers to ensure they are advancing in their knowledge and abilities, as required by the position.
  • Work with Senior Trainers to develop local trainers and keep them informed of program or policy changes, updated regulations, etc.
  • Meet with Director of Safety regularly to review senior trainer performance.
  • Manage the road observation program to increase and improve driver coaching opportunities.
  • Conduct SC safety training meetings when needed to help roll out new initiatives or fill in for a senior trainer.
  • Complete new hire or remedial in-cab training to drivers, as well as other training or coaching when needed to maintain training schedule or fill in for a senior trainer.
  • Provide guidance in safety-related areas, i.e. hours-of-service, hazardous materials, DOT regulations, etc.
  • Represent company at industry functions.

Job Requirements


  • Must be a CDL Class A Ward-qualified driver with a safe driving history.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills & knowledge of the trucking industry.
  • Possess good work ethic and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work well with RSCMs, drivers, and all other employees.
  • Strong knowledge of DOT and OSHA regulations, as well as all company systems (Cheetah, XRS, etc.) and procedures
  • Excellent teaching, training, and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of computer programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to travel approximately 25% of time.
